I’ve looked closely at number plates ever since reading a feature on them in “octavo, international journal of typography” when I was studying graphics at college.

At the time I remember thinking that this must be the height of typographic pretension – it was written in a particularly dry and serious way – but now of course I love this kind of stuff.
